Policy analysis takes most of PhD economists’ time

Other tasks consume just a quarter of their official hours

Central bank economists with a doctor of philosophy degree (PhD) devote more time to policy analysis and policy-focused research than other studies, the Economics Benchmarks 2024 reveal.

PhD economists across 25 central banks spend an average of 44.2% of official hours on policy research/analysis. The proportions span from a low of 20% in two jurisdictions to a high of 80% in one low income central bank from Africa.

Other areas such as forecasting takes up an average of 25.4% of PhD economists’
