Economists’ median salary falls below $30,000 a year

Annual budget of economics departments averages under $1 million

Junior-to-mid-level economists at central banks earn a median annual salary under $30,000, data from the Economics Benchmarks 2024 find.

Across 23 jurisdictions, the median salary for economists below director levels is $29,353 a year. The figure is lower when compared with the median value of $33,297 a year reported in the 2023 benchmark, albeit in a different sample of central banks.
