Austria’s Partsch explains decision to raise equity exposures

Central bank boosted equity investments from 5% to 12% in wake of pandemic

In May 2021, the National Bank of Austria sharply increased equity investments, in response to the market dynamics it identified during the pandemic.

The central bank had first invested in equities in 2008. In the aftermath of the great financial crisis, the low-yield market environment pushed reserve managers to adopt riskier assets. Over the following decade, these equity investments gradually increased until they reached 5% of the portfolio.

Nonetheless, the pandemic showed this allocation
