Poland law would fund coal benefit with central bank’s profit

National Bank of Poland remitted 95% of profits to government in 2020

The Polish government is proposing using central bank profits to subsidise households that use coal as heating fuel. The programme would provide a single 3,000 zloty ($640) payment to every Polish home with a coal-burning heating system.

The text of the new law also includes amendments to legislation governing the Bank Guarantee Fund, the country’s deposit insurance agency.

The proposed law, introduced on July 19, would channel the National Bank of Poland’s profits to the existing Covid-19
