Public trust in central banks is declining and should be more closely assessed by policy-makers, a former division head at the Bank of England tells Central Banking.

David Aikman, who served as the technical head of the BoE’s macro-prudential policy division from 2002 to 2020, notes that trust in central banks has taken “quite a big hit” in recent years. Inflation in the UK has damaged the BoE’s reputation, he says, while political attacks have eroded trust in the US Federal Reserve.
