Most central banks have payment and settlement supervision mandates

Payment system laws contain oversight powers in two-thirds of jurisdictions

The majority of central banks are vested with authority to control their countries’ payments sub-sector, the Payments Benchmarks 2023 find.

The responses to this section came from 30 central banks. Sixty per cent of the respondents say their mandates grant powers to operate, regulate and oversee payment systems and other settlement systems. Settlement systems include securities settlement systems or central counterparties.
