Majority of central banks plan technology upgrade within a year

More than 40% of central banks’ primary real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems experienced outages in the past year, the Payments Benchmarks 2024 reveal.

A dissection of the sample of 34 respondents shows that 15 (44.1%) central banks experienced outages in the past 12 months.

In a smaller sample of respondents in the 2023 benchmark, two-thirds (67%) of respondents reported an outage that year.

A further 66.7% of respondents this year say they have plans to upgrade their primary RTGS systems
