Some central banks directly regulate RTGS prices

Direct intervention in pricing of other payments means is less common, benchmark respondents say

Central banks responding to the Payments Benchmarks 2022 are much more likely to regulate the price of real-time gross settlements (RTGS) services, than other payments means.

A total of 19 central banks answered questions on whether they regulated the prices of five different kinds of payments service. Of those respondents, over two-thirds regulated RTGS services. In sharp contrast, only a minority directly regulated the prices of the other four kinds of service.

Some 14 central banks said
