Over 25% of central banks pre-brief government on policy decisions

Briefing patterns differ across institutions, as two central banks start practice

Monetary policy decisions are independently formulated in the vast majority of central banks, but just over a quarter of institutions relay policy choices to government officials before they are made public, the Monetary Policy Benchmarks 2024 find.

The sample of 47 respondents shows that 27.7% of central banks brief either the president, prime minister or the finance ministry before decisions are published. The percentage this year is slightly higher than the 23% in the 2023 benchmark.
