Labour supply key to understanding inflation, Shin tells G20

Understanding labour market is critical task for policy-makers, BIS head of research says

Policy-makers need to understand shifting patterns of labour supply if they are to understand current inflationary tends, the Bank for International Settlements’ Hyun Song Shin said on July 17.

Shin told a meeting of the Group of Twenty in Bali that the supply side of the economy is an important factor in understanding the current “inflationary episode”.

Inflation was high on the agenda for central bankers and finance ministers meeting in Bali. A communique by the group issued on July 16
