Bank of Italy confirms Panetta as senior deputy after clashes with government

Two new deputy governors also appointed after dispute with coalition government

The Bank of Italy’s board has named one of its deputy governors, Fabio Panetta, to the role of senior deputy governor, after the incumbent announced he would not be seeking a second term following strong criticism of the central bank’s leadership by senior government figures.

Panetta will replace Salvatore Rossi as senior deputy governor, the central bank announced on March 28. He will effectively serve as the main deputy to governor Ignazio Visco.
