UK figures reveal 1.47 million people out of work
While the employment rate has continued to rise, the rate of unemployment has increased by the sharpest level in almost five years
The UK has seen the sharpest increase in its unemployment rate in almost five years, according to the latest data published by the Office for National Statistics.
The unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage points compared with the previous quarter to 4.4% in the three months to December 2017.
“Latest estimates from the Labour Force Survey show that following a period of a continuous decline, the number of unemployed people increased by 46,000 to 1.47 million,” the ONS says in a statement.
