Researchers examine Covid-19’s impact on eurozone lending
Pandemic changed banks’ lending but did not lead to widespread cut in collateral values, paper finds
A working paper published by the European Central Bank examines the impact of Covid-19 on eurozone banks’ treatment of real estate collateral.
In Asset prices, collateral and bank lending: the case of Covid-19 and real estate, Aoife Horan, Barbara Jarmulska and Ellen Ryan use monthly data from the ECB’s AnaCredit registry. Their dataset shows eurozone bank loans to firms worth more than €25,000 ($27,000), from the beginning of 2019 to the end of 2021.
