Rise of electronic payments is not reflected in falling demand for cash

Cash is still very popular in many countries

Most countries show a continuing and even rising demand for cash, even as electronic payments become more widely adopted, research published by the Bank for International Settlements shows.

The special feature, written by Morten Bech, Umar Faruqui, Frederik Ougaard and Cristina Picillo, presents data implying cash in circulation and the value of payments as a share of GDP have tended to increase in tandem in many advanced economies and emerging markets.

Sweden is a notable exception, where
