Fewer counterfeit banknotes withdrawn in Portugal in 2015
€20 remains most frequently faked denomination
Last year, 8,587 counterfeit banknotes were taken out of circulation in Portugal, the central bank announced today (January 19). This represents a decline of 7.2% from the 9,250 withdrawn in 2014.
The Bank of Portugal released a breakdown of the results, showing how many counterfeits were withdrawn for each denomination of banknote. The €20 note was, again, the most frequently counterfeited, reflecting wider trends in the eurozone.
There were 4,755 counterfeit €20 notes removed in 2015
