Irish central bank to gain stronger anti-counterfeiting powers

Draft law makes Irish central bank national currency analysis centre and gives it enforcement role

The European Central Bank has welcomed a draft law that aims to strengthen the Irish central bank’s powers to act against currency counterfeiting.

The law sets out to align the Irish legal framework on counterfeiting with four pieces of European Union legislation in the area, the ECB says in a legal opinion.

The opinion says the draft law will put “a comprehensive set of functions and instruments” at the disposal of the Central Bank of Ireland. The measure will ensure Ireland has “an effective
