Riksbank senior adviser thinks it highly unlikely cash will disappear completely in Sweden
At the end of 2019, Central Banking investigated what central banks were doing to stop cash from becoming obsolete. Ensuring everyone has a payment choice should be the responsibility of monetary authorities worldwide, but without official mandates, governments may become responsible for the future of cash.
Across the globe, cash may no longer be king but it is not dead. Nowhere is its use dropping faster than in Sweden. In 2018, only 13% of Swedes reported using cash for a recent purchase
