BoJ paper harnesses census data to improve industry surveys

Researchers aim to make the Bank of Japan’s Tankan survey more accurate

The Bank of Japan's (BoJ) research department has sought to improve the accuracy of its Tankan survey of business sentiment by incorporating census data.

Researchers present their findings in a paper published on September 23. They adjust the sampling method used for the Tankan on the basis of Japan's economic census, which captures details of businesses across the country.

By incorporating the information, the BoJ is better able to design a sample for the survey that reflects the actual
