Bleak new outlook from Eichengreen and O'Rourke

In April and June this year Barry Eichengreen and Kevin O'Rourke, respectively economists at the University of California and at Trinity College, Dublin issued much publicised assessments of the global economic crisis, comparing key variables today with those prevailing during the Great Depression.

Their broad conclusion was that this crisis was at least as bad as the 1930s and was by no means over, although encouragingly, the global policy response has been very different, with governments
