Countries with high import coverage invest more in non-SDR debt

Breakdown of asset allocations shows Europe holds nearly half of world’s ESG-focused bonds

Central banks that maintain high import coverage ratios hold more of their reserves in the sovereign debt of nations that are not in the basket of the special drawing rights (SDR), the Reserve Benchmarks 2024 find.

The chart shows how the total pool of reserves in the sample of 56 central banks is allocated to different asset classes, weighted by the size of reserve holdings. The second chart below shows the percentage asset allocation, unweighted by reserves.
