EME central banks more likely to license fintech firms

Most institutions choose activity-based approach over other licensing methods

Just over one-quarter of central banks issue licences specifically tailored to fintech firms, most commonly in emerging market economy (EME) jurisdictions, data from the Fintech Benchmarks 2023 shows.

The question on fintech firms licensing generated 37 responses. Only 27% of respondents said they license fintech entities. This is slightly less than the 32% reported in the past year.
