BoE’s Hauser mulls future of central bank balance sheets

Balance sheets will be bigger but also more variable, executive director says

The central bank “balance sheet of the future” will be very different to “those we knew at the start of the millennium”, the Bank of England’s Andrew Hauser said today (September 13).

The executive director for markets said balance sheets would ultimately have to be larger than before, to take account of long-term changes in the demand for liquidity. But they will also have to be more variable, playing a bigger role as a counter-cyclical tool, he told a conference hosted by the International
