Brazil regulators cut off loans for environmental law violators

Resolution marks change in policy from Bolsonaro era

Brazilian regulators have prohibited loans to rural enterprises that violate environmental and indigenous-rights legislation.

In a June 29 decision, the national monetary council barred banks from lending to rural properties under “embargo by the competent environmental agency, federal or state… arising from the economic use of illegally deforested areas on rural property”.

The council also cut off credit to rural properties in designated conservation zones, national forests and listed
