Ecuador presidential election makes central bank reform likely
President-elect favours measure granting autonomy to central bank
Guillermo Lasso won the second round of presidential elections in Ecuador on April 11, making the passage of an International Monetary Fund-backed law giving the central bank autonomy more likely. His opponent, Andres Árauz, conceded defeat after a nearly completed count showed Lasso had won about 52.4% of the vote.
The IMF first demanded in 2019 that the government change the law governing the Banco Central de Ecuador as a condition for aid. It granted Ecuador a $6.5 billion loan in September
