Romania may be at end of tightening cycle

Inflation resumed upward march in November, but major bank says cycle has ended

The National Bank of Romania (NBR) raised its policy rate by 25 basis points, to 7%, on January 10. The eleventh consecutive rate hike since October 2021 could be the last in the current cycle, bank analysts say.

In its press statement, the central bank reported that headline inflation rose again in November, to 16.8%, after falling in October. Core inflation reached 14%. The inflation target is 2.5%, with a 1% tolerance band in either direction.
