Carney and Carstens among possible candidates as institution seeks successor to Lagarde

The surprise announcement on July 2 that Christine Lagarde had been nominated for the European Central Bank presidency threw open the question of who could succeed her at the International Monetary Fund.

Of the 11 people who have held the post of managing director, all have been European. The convention has held since the IMF was founded in 1945, with a North American tending to lead the World Bank.
