Central Banking's central bank of the year 2017 has not had the easiest 12 months. In the year in review, it overcame accusations it had become too political, provided support to the banking system when a surprise vote shocked markets, and launched a series of polymer banknotes.

The Bank of England (BoE) was a rare example of stability amid a turbulent year. Having undergone a series of reforms in earlier years, the institution proved it was open to scrutiny and willing to change for the better
