ECB announces plans for instant payment system changes

Coming year will see “decisive” innovations, Yves Mersch says

This year will be "decisive" for retail payment systems in Europe, according to a member of the European Central Bank's executive board.

There should be several major innovations in European payment systems during 2017, Yves Mersch told an audience at the Banque de France on January 6. This includes the rolling out of instant payments by the end of the year, and changes to the infrastructure necessary to support that.
