ESRB unveils methodology for mapping shadow banks

Major gaps still exist in data, regulator says

The European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) has unveiled a report on Europe's shadow banking sector together with a detailed explanation of the methodology it used. The ESRB says gaps in the data mean that it could not construct risk metrics for around half of Europe's shadow banking entities.

Total assets of the sector in the European Union were €37 trillion ($41 trillion) in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to the report, published July 27. This amounts to 36% of the total assets of the EU's
