IMF tells Kenya to step up regulation of crypto market

Authorities will need to better understand digital assets market before changing policy, report says

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called on Kenya’s authorities to make greater efforts to supervise the country’s crypto asset market.

At the authorities’ request, an IMF delegation visited the capital Nairobi in February 2024 and met with the country’s capital markets authority, central bank and treasury to discuss issues relating to the crypto asset market. The multilateral organisation published a report on January 8 summarising the findings and recommendations from the visit.
