Bahamas’ central bank will tell lenders to make CBDC available

Governor says central bank will introduce measures over next two years amid low take-up

The Central Bank of The Bahamas is preparing regulations that will require local commercial lenders to distribute its central bank digital currency (CBDC), according to reports.

Governor John Rolle told Reuters that commercial banks in the Bahamas should expect regulations forcing the commercial distribution of the CBDC, called the ‘sand dollar’. “We foresee a process where all of the commercial banks will eventually be in that space and they will be required to provide their clients with access
