Russia starts digital ruble trials

Sanctioned banks are participating in CBDC pilot

The Bank of Russia said it is launching its central bank digital currency pilot today (August 15), after digital ruble legislation passed by the State Duma came into effect on August 1.

Thirteen banks are participating and a limited number of their clients, the Bank of Russia announced in a press release. The list of banks involved includes some that are subject to sanctions. The pilot includes 30 points of sale across 11 cities.
