ECB board member argues for CBDC as bank says national card payment schemes are declining

Piero Cipollone has urged the European Union to approve the digital euro so the continent does not “stand still” in the face of evolving digital payments.

In an article in economics journal Bancaria today (February 28), the European Central Bank executive board member writes that digital payments stand at the intersection of the two fields in which the US has accelerated past Europe: information technology and finance.

“If we take these two sectors out, the [productivity] gap disappears,”
