Bank of Canada pivots away from retail CBDC

Decision to scale back research follows similar move by Australian central bank

The Bank of Canada has announced that it is scaling back its research on a retail central bank digital currency (CBDC) and shifting its focus to broader research on payments systems.

The bank said the body of knowledge it had built up during the years it had spent assessing the viability of a retail CBDC would still be invaluable if the government did decide to create a digital Canadian dollar in the future.
