Eurozone consumers’ smart payments use limited – ECB paper

Many customers believe merchants do not accept non-cash methods, researchers say

Many eurozone consumers use mobile banking apps, but far fewer use smart payment systems, a working paper published by the European Central Bank finds. 

In Consumers’ payment preferences and banking digitalisation in the euro area, Justus Meyer and Federica Teppa use microdata from the ECB’s consumer expectations survey. The authors particularly look at “app-based tools for day-to-day (offline) purchases that involve small amounts of money as well as digital tools for managing personal finances”
