Riksbank simulates a payments crisis scenario

Central bank deems offline payments and withdrawals a suitable alternative to credit cards

The retail payments council of Sveriges Riksbank considers the possibility of carrying out withdrawals and payments offline may be an alternative to banking cards in the case of a general failure of the market infrastructure.

In a scenario simulated by the council it is not possible to use charge cards, credit cards and bank cards as normal in a geographically limited area, covering both town and countryside. Although electricity is available, cash withdrawals cannot be made to the normal
