BoE’s Tucker urges careful consideration of negative interest rates

The Bank of England's Paul Tucker today raised the prospect of setting negative interest rates, which he said would be an "extraordinary thing to do and would have to be considered carefully".

Tucker, a deputy governor at the central bank, told the UK Parliament's Treasury Committee that he hoped the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) would think about the policy and its constraints, but stressed it was not something people should "clutch on to as the answer to the universe".
