Chilean governor leaves central bank to become finance minister
Mario Marcel led central bank through period of social unrest and Covid-19 pandemic
The governor of the Central Bank of Chile, Mario Marcel, has left the role to join the country’s new government as finance minister.
Incoming left-wing president Gabriel Boric unveiled his cabinet today (January 21). Boric won the December elections against hard-right lawyer José Antonio Kast. He will take office on March 11.
Marcel served as governor since December 2016, after being appointed to the role by Chile’s then president, the left-of-centre leader Michelle Bachelet. He had joined the
