Bank of Japan appoints first female executive director

Tokiko Shimizu becomes first female executive director since bank was established in 1882

The Bank of Japan has appointed its first female executive director since it was established 138 years ago, the central bank announced on May 11.

Tokiko Shimizu, 55, currently head of the BoJ’s Nagoya branch, started a four-year term as executive director this week, replacing Eiji Maeda after his term ended. Shimizu will stay at the helm at the central bank’s Nagoya branch.

Her appointment is a step forward for Japan in catching up with the rest of the world on gender equality, says Takuji
