Central bank launches “new and safe method” for electronic payments

The Qatar Central Bank has unveiled a mobile payment system that it hopes will support efficient, electronic payments in the country.

Users are able to create an electronic wallet on their phones, which they can use to send and receive payments 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The central bank has issued specifications to allow people to make payments using QR codes at points of sale and on public transport.

The QCB said the system would be open to everyone in the country and would therefore
