Central bank says media reports of amounts involved are ‘exaggerated’

According to media reports, Syria’s new government has had to import banknotes from Russia as it tackles a cash crunch following the overthrow of former president Bashar al-Assad.

In a social media post on February 14, the Central Bank of Syria admitted that banknotes had been flown into the capital Damascus from Russia. However, it added that the figures circulating in the media about the volume and quantity of the notes were “completely inaccurate”, though it did not provide any specifics.
