Non-bank growth slowed in 2018, says FSB

Riskiest forms of non-banks still growing, but overall assets went into reverse in 2018

Growth in non-bank assets slowed sharply in 2018, with some sectors shrinking – in marked contrast to the breakneck growth of earlier years.

The latest non-bank financial intermediation monitoring report by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) shows the “narrow measure” of the most risky types of non-bank assets grew 1.7% in 2018, far below its annual average of 8.5% from 2012–17. Such assets now make up 13.6% of global financial assets, up slightly from 12.1% in 2011.
