Commercial banks are boosting profits by cutting risk provisioning, says central bank

Austria’s commercial banks increased their profitability over the past financial year by reducing their risk provisioning, the Austrian National Bank (OeNB) says.

It remains to be seen whether this strategy was sustainable, the OeNB says in its latest six-monthly financial stability review, published on July 14. The quality of loans made by Austrian commercial banks are “mostly based on sustainable lending standards”, but banks’ operating profits before risk provisioning are falling, the OeNB
