RTGS extensions often happen gradually – BIS-authored study

Authors say extended operations can increase risk of fraud in late hours

Real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems that have succeeded in extending their operating hours did so gradually, a new study published by the Bank for International Settlements finds.

The study, authored by secretariat members of the BIS’s committee on payments and market infrastructures, says these kinds of extensions may require changes to the core payment system’s hardware and software. They may also involve changes to related applications and support systems, such as the messaging platforms
