Study estimates scale of ‘demographic drag’
Loss of economic growth from population ageing could be significant, authors warn
Ageing populations around the world are likely to exert major “demographic drag” on economic growth, new research finds.
Rainer Kotschy and David Bloom create an empirical model of how demographics impact growth, which they then fit to 145 countries over the period 1950–2015. In the working paper, they report the model “successfully reproduces” patterns observed in the data.
The authors then use the model to estimate the likely effects of population ageing from 2020–2050. Without any ageing
