
US tariffs could have larger-than-expected impact – study
Author suggests trade statistics are being misreported

US tariffs on China could have a larger impact on the US economy than is being suggested, research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York has claimed.
On February 1, president Donald Trump’s administration increased tariffs on all products from China by 10 percentage points. Under his previous 2017–21 administration, tariffs on China rose from 2.7% to 17.5%. They did not significantly change during president Joe Biden’s 2021–25 administration.
