ECB steps up research on ‘digital euro’

Central bank analysing both centralised and decentralised options for a digital currency

The European Central Bank is significantly increasing its work on a possible “digital euro”, issuing a report on the subject today (October 2).

“We should be prepared to issue a digital euro, should the need arise,” says ECB president Christine Lagarde. The ECB also announced it will open a public consultation on a central bank-issued digital currency, or CBDC, on October 12.
