Thai SEC executive explains country’s ban on crypto-asset trading

Thai authorities struggled to find a happy medium between consumer protection and innovation

Thailand struggled to strike a balance between consumer protection and innovation while imposing and then relaxing a ban on crypto-asset activities by banks, said the director of fintech at the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Archari Suppiroj spoke at a conference about the Bank of Thailand’s decision to ban banks from offering services to crypto exchanges in February 2018, before regulations were again relaxed by the passage of a new law in May 2018.
