Bank of Uganda denies issuing warning on currency ‘bouquets’

Comms staff nevertheless urge Ugandans not to engage in “misuse of money”

The Ugandan central bank denied issuing a public notice demanding people stop folding banknotes into ornamental bouquets, although a spokesperson warned against the practice.

The disavowed notice, dated February 2, said people misusing currency would be charged and imprisoned. The Bank of Uganda said the press release was a fake the following day.

However, in comments to the Daily Monitor, Bank of Uganda spokesperson Charity Mugumya said the bouquets are “a misuse of money” that wears out
