There is a wide range of different staffing levels in the cash departments at central banks, with some outsourcing a lot of cash-processing work and others keeping operations in-house.
In particular, central banks that operate their own printworks tend to have more staff employed full-time in the cash department, according to new data from Central Banking’s Currency Benchmarks 2020. There is also some evidence of a correlation to population size.
